As the closest state north of where I live, Georgia is frequently on my mind. I pass through it on most of my road trips, and now that my cousin lives in the quiet northwest corner of the state, I have more of an excuse to take the back roads, stopping to see Jimmy Carter's house in Plains, the legacy of FDR at Pine Mountain, Confederate shipbuilding in Columbus, and museums and parks around Atlanta. On trips to the Carolinas, I drive through Macon and Athens, visiting offbeat places like the Uncle Remus Museum. From Cumberland Island and the Okeefenokee Swamp to the Appalachian Trail, Georgia has much to offer.
