As a kid, I remember South Carolina being our perennial stopover point between New Jersey and Florida on road trips. It was a family tradition to visit South of the Border, that ticky-tacky Mexican-themed collection of shops, restaurants, and attractions in Dillon, and we stayed at other points along US 301 too: Santee, Orangeburg, and Allendale frequently among them. As I got into hiking, I discovered the glorious mountains of South Carolina and places like Table Rock State Park and the Foothills Trail, thanks to friends who lived nearby.
