Of the original American colonies, Virginia appeals to me for its depth of history. Alexandria was my stomping ground for several years a lifetime ago, and I got to know Old Town like an old familiar friend. Living within an easy drive of the Shenandoah Valley, it was where I first fell in love with show caves, and hiked my first steps on the Appalachian Trail. For the Mid-Atlantic, it's a large state with much to see, and I've done my best to see much of it.
